Is paracetamol safe? [by: Mini Tangas]

Is paracetamol safe? [by: Mini Tangas]

About a month ago, the National Food and Drug Administration United States (FDA) issued a warning to many painkillers (Painkiller), which are sold free and contain paracetamol, can be dangerous because of potential liver damage.

Paracetamol is a popular analgesic medication used to relieve shortness of breath, fever, or mild pain. According to the FDA's previous recommendation dose of paracetamol is safe to consume no more than 4000 mg in a 24-hour period for adults and children over the age of 12 years.

Unfortunately due to paracetamol including drugs easily available, drug overdose whether intentionally or not often happen. For example, people who suffer from arthritis or joint pain which is easily overdose when he was taking arthritis every 4 or 6 hours and added more pain relief medication that contains paracetamol and is usually sold freely. Joint pain medication like Tylenol contains 325 mg paracetamol and 500 mg for extra strong type.

For years, consumers feel safe in choosing paracetamol as a painkiller. Unlike the type of ibuprofen or Painkiller acetosal (Acetylsalicylic acid), paracetamol does not cause inflammation. That's why these drugs are often considered safe.

But in fact, a recent study showed high doses of paracetamol can cause liver damage, even death.

To avoid these side effects, the FDA lowered safe dose of paracetamol, which is 3250 mg for adults (some experts feel the dose is still too high) and for a single dose no more than 650 mg.

Also due to a combination of paracetamol and alcohol can poison the liver, then the people who consume more than three glasses of alcohol intake is recommended to reduce the dose of paracetamol from ordinary.

Consumers are also expected to be wary because of the possibility of taking over-doses of some drugs containing paracetamol at the same time to reduce symptoms such as fever, headache, menstrual pain, or influenza.
